my BIID news

BIID Annual General Meeting 2025
In June, I put myself forward for election to the British Institute of Interior Design's Council of Directors. Each year, ahead of the AGM, Registered Interior Designer members are invited to nominate themselves if they'd like to volunteer on the Council of Directors for a term of two years. You need to find two members to nominate you - and then you wait for the AGM in September. In the meantime you find out who you are standing against.
I constantly am asking myself if I am in the right place to raise awareness of the impacts my industry has, in service to Nature, Animals and Future Generations that are affected.
It's written into the objectives of my company shown below (with clarity help from Rachel of Brand New Story) + even legally into the Articles of Association for my company (thanks to Sam of SO Law) . As part of being a B Corporation - we amend the articles to state the company will have a positive impact on society and the environment in everything it does.
So it's on my mind lots!
Thank you for all the encouragement and votes received. I'm happy to tell you it was confirmed at the AGM that I'm now a Director of the British Institute of Interior Design.
As of this week I'm serving my first term on the Council for our professional body and its members - I have a great admiration for both after being a member for over 12 years. I'm delighted to represent Nature, Animals and Future Generations in the running of our institute. And its extra special in this 60th anniversary year of the organisation.
It's a huge honour.
Thank you to my wonderful fellow Council candidates Helen Hookway, Tobias Trigg, Anna Burles and Debra Kacher. All were such strong candidates and it's sad there were just three vacancies to fill. I'm joined by Anna and Debra who both have served one term and are returning on to Council.
Thank you to Lori Pinkerton-Rolet and Susie Rumbold for nominating me to run for Council.

After that announcement at the AGM last Thursday, I received the MERIT AWARD for services to the Interior Design Industry and am completely bowled over by that. I think I've been to every AGM since being a member. I've watched as incredible designers from my industry are awarded this award. I did not think this was ever something I would be given. I am joining the most incredible alumni! Apparently I'm the first recipient to not to have already served a term on Council. It's very special.
Here's what the Council and Award Committee said....
The Merit Award honours a BIID member who has particularly excelled in three key criteria: excellence in interior design practice; a contribution to the development of the Institute and a commitment to the wider field of design education. Chosen by the awards committee, the 2025 award was presented to BIID Registered Interior Designer Chloe Bullock.
Chloe founded her Brighton-based studio, Materialise Interiors, in 2005 and has since been a trailblazer in human-centred, sustainable, and cruelty-free interior design.
She was the very first UK interior designer to be Vegan Design Certified, was a founding member of Interior Design Declares and in recognition of her pioneering work, PETA named her βCompassionate Designerβ in its 2023 Vegan Homeware Awards. In 2024 Chloe published her book βSustainable Interior Designβ with RIBA Publishing. A huge achievement it features 40 international case studies to show how sustainable design contributes to health and wellbeing, promotes ecology and embraces the circular economy.
Chloe joined the BIID in 2013 and since then has volunteered in several capacities β she has spoken on panel discussions for us, was a member of the Sustainability Committee for many years and co-authored the BIID Sustainable Specifying Guide.
This recognition and award is energising + much appreciated.
It's a career I've been in for over three decades and two of those have been running Materialise Interiors. It's not quite the glamorous industry as it appears on TV. We need many skills + wear many hats + the tiniest amount of actual DESIGN happens in reality.
I feel like for most of my time running my business has been against the tide in some form - Financial Crisis, Brexit uncertainty + Covid - let alone anything in my own life. I'm proud to have survived in business for so long, so it's incredible to be recognised for trying to continue the way of doings things I was so fortunate to learn whilst working at The Body Shop HQ for a decade (thanks to Anita + Gordon Roddick).
I'm hugely grateful everyone who has encouraged and supported me along the way. It's a ridiculous amount of you. I'm very grateful! Thank you to the Council + to the Award Committee for this recognition and award.
Inauguration of our new BIID President
Many congratulations on being our new president Liz Bell + president elect Anna Burles.
Thanks so much to our outgoing president Angela Bardino.
Well done on the 2nd CPD Award Nicola Burt!
